I realized the moment I fell into the fissure that the Book would not be destroyed as I had planned. It continued falling into that starry expanse, of which I had only a fleeting glimpse. I have tried to speculate where it might have landed, but I must admit that such conjecture is futile. Still, questions about whose hands might one day hold my Myst book are unsettling to me. I know my apprehensions might never be allayed, and so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written. -- Atrus

New Year, New Mission

Happy New Year!

I am happy to announce that iota has moved on, on, on in the game!  She'd completed Stage 1 a long time ago, but due to the holidays and laziness I never got around to writing it up.  She finished all the Ages of Yeesha's assigned journey and currently she's working on the marker missions, which, as you know, I loathe.  I'll discuss that later on.

Her last Age to complete was Gahreesen and she met some snags.  I think at this point we were both anxious for her to finish because it's always so exciting when the end is near.  You just can't wait to see what the reward will be!  And there are lots of rewards at the end of this mission.

She found most places fairly easily, though she missed the first Journey Cloth and Relto Page--or rather the second of each since she had already gotten the link to the prison cells in the fortress from Teledahn.  The main problem she faced was in the power hub.  She didn't know how to solve the puzzle so I helped a bit more heavily than perhaps I should have.

Everything else came easily to her.  She spent a long time carefully examining the fortress which was fun for me because I noticed things I had either forgotten about or didn't notice before, such as this awesome Maintainer suit.  And I thought back with an aching heart to Uru: Complete Chronicles where we could obtain our own Maintainer suit!  What happened to that?

After she had gotten everything else, I gave an obvious hint that she missed some stuff in the beginning.  She found the last Journey Cloth and the Relto Page and we linked out to escape the deep crack.

Now came time for the last Journey Door.  I asked her if she had found it already, but she hadn't.  I'm sure if she had just wandered around for a while she would have spotted it, but my big mouth told her where it was.  She asked, not for the last time, how people were supposed to know to look there.  Well, it is a Myst game, so stuff is really not going to be obvious, but she thinks perhaps this in some ways is what made it unsuccessful as a MMO.  She's played other games that are a bit more intuitive (and which have maps in the corners which she thinks Uru could have benefited from).

With her last pillar came the extra-unobvious part.  I certainly didn't get it when I played for the first time.  However, she did figure out she had to return the pillars, but she wasn't sure how, so I again told her the answer.  Oops.  But after a bunch of running around and linking everywhere, she finished!  She got her D'ni goggles and her rain, and her Journey shirt (which I don't believe she actually knows about yet).

And so it was time to move on to the next stage!  It's a little daunting to figure out what to do next since it's a free-for-all.  So we went into Eder Delin, which is in our neighborhood in case anyone is looking for one, so that she could get her Relto Pages.  I'll have to hunt down a Tsogal.  I told her that there are people who do door runs, so we will have to ask for one of those some time.  Which means we will have to be antisocial one of these days.

We also went hunting for the Relto Page in Bevin.  For me it didn't show up, but she was able to get it.  I asked which one it was and she said it was something that looked like amoebas.  I was laughing so much at this.  It was the islands page:

By the way, if you haven't done a Google image search of Relto Pages, you should try it.  Someone made one for a Squee and another person made one for a toilet.  Hilarious!

At last, the dreaded marker missions lay before us.  Now that iota was not altogether sure what she should do, I nudged her toward the Great Zero link in Bevin and sent her forth on her missions.  She hasn't done much exploring through the lists in the Nexus, so we will focus on the markers for now until she finishes or gets bored -- whichever one comes first!

In hunting she alerted me to the Christmas tree in the Baron's office:

Also, while she was searching for markers around the library I found two things of interest.  First was a Linking Stone which I thought existed but hadn't seen throughout my replay, so I thought maybe it wasn't in MOULa.  But there it was, the link to the roof of the pyramid in Kadish Tolesa.

Secondly, I noticed some lovely artwork on the exterior walls of the library:

Who are these folks?  I'm always curious as to how the D'ni dressed, so I love seeing this stuff.  I hope it's not like in Riven where they adapted a picture of a Civil War officer hahahaha!!!!  These guys kind of look medieval.

iota has been having trouble trying to find all the markers for the red marker search.  We spent almost four hours hunting them down and now she has three left.  she tried logging off and on again to see if that helped at all, and apparently it did.  So hopefully this weekend she can find the last three so she can be granted access to the rest of the Great Zero.

I let her know about the Linking Stone buried in the rubble of her private Tokotah Alley, thinking it was a link to Phil's Relto (I never can remember these things), but it was to something much better, the Great Shaft.  She found a lot of goodies there.  Now if I can just remember where the heck the link to Phil's Relto is...
