I realized the moment I fell into the fissure that the Book would not be destroyed as I had planned. It continued falling into that starry expanse, of which I had only a fleeting glimpse. I have tried to speculate where it might have landed, but I must admit that such conjecture is futile. Still, questions about whose hands might one day hold my Myst book are unsettling to me. I know my apprehensions might never be allayed, and so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written. -- Atrus

Sexified Myst?

There's an interesting discussion sort of happening on the Cyan Forums titled Cyan, you're sitting on a pile of gold... HBO!

Long story short, people are discussing the dark aspects of the games, hinting at the fact that they are not child-proof.  For some, if Myst were to become an HBO show, which would probably mean a lot of sex and violence (in combination with a really awesome story), this has brought up some discomfort.

A lot of stuff I love to watch (TV and movies) tends to be rather graphic, such as Oz, Game of Thrones, Hannibal (to name some TV) and, well, don't get me started on movies because this post would be longer than War and Peace.  Thus I am not prudish when it comes to this stuff (I can be prudish in other ways though.  A friend of mine laughs at me because I am half prudish and half wild -- I have no idea how I manage this.).  However, I can see how it would be really weird to include sex in an adaptation of Myst, simply because it doesn't appear in the source material.

Now, I know that it happens in the story...I mean Gehn doesn't get dropped on Aitrus/Ti'ana's doorstep, and of course there is the part in the Book of Ti'ana where, when Aitrus is delivering his closing arguments and he mentions Ti'ana is in labor, the council chamber erupts with some giggles.  One imagines nudges and winks and other subtleties that tell us the men of D'ni are no less immature than the men of the surface haha!  Sillies.

However, is there really room to put in sex scenes?  I guess there could be?  The Book of Ti'ana is rather abbreviated, I mean, we don't even get to see a wedding in the book, which could be added in a TV series, so this could lead to some steamy scenes.  But how much more could there be?  Even if the entire Myst series--books and games--were adapted there couldn't really be that much there.  *eyebrow raise*  Let's see...Aitrus/Ti'ana, Gehn/Keta, Atrus/Catherine, Marrim/Eedrah.  I suppose the series could stand to give Veovis some girlfriends because the guy is handsome and charming and rich.  Surely he would have been quite the ladies man.  But there's not really much to work with.  And I actually think it would be really weird to see any.  My aunt, when she saw my picture with Rand commented that he wore his jeans well, which immediately made me uncomfortable because...dude, that's Atrus.  So not something I want to think about!

Violence on the other hand is an easy one, because it's everywhere.  Violence seems so much easier for people to handle, after all it is very present in the series.

I don't really know where I am going with this.  Thoughts?

As an aside, I have a bone to pick with the books.  I find all the female characters extremely flat.  Did you notice they are all basically Anna?  Well, I guess Anna isn't flat, but all the others are exactly like her which makes them flat.  Catherine is kind of an oddball which gives her some distinction.  Yeesha is a freak also, but still they are all the same person.  I find that so frustrating.
